Biografie |


Pous Silverius is die seun van Pous Hormisdas gebore voordat Hormisdas priester geword het. Op 8 Junie 536 volg hy Pous Agapetus I op en regeer tot hy afgeset word deur die Bisantynse generaal Belisarius in Maart 537. Daar word beweer dat hy sy pousskap gekoop het van koning Theodahad.[verwysing benodig] Hy word opgevolg deur Pous Vigilius. Die naam ‘Silverius’ beteken 'bosman' in Latyn.



Pontifikaat |


Pous Silverius het die beleid van sy voorganger Pous Agapetus I om patriarg Antimus van Bisantium af te sit omdat hy 'n Monofisiet was, gesteun. Die beleid het hom baie onpopulêr gemaak in die Bisantynse Ryk. Keiserin Theodora het daarom probeer om Vigilius pous te maak.


Rome is op 9 Desember 536 ingeneem deur Belisarius. Witiges, die koning van die Oos-Gote, het probeer om die stad te herower, maar sy beleg het die bevolking amper laat verhonger. Daar word beweer dat Silverius die stad aan Witiges wou verraai.[verwysing benodig] Deur die poging tot verraad is hy in Maart 537 deur Belisarius gedegradeer tot gewoonlike monnik. Keiser Justinianus I het hom egter in sy waardigheid herstel. Vigilius het Silverius egter in die gevangenis gesit op die eiland Panditaria (teenswoordig Ventotene).[verwysing benodig] Die Liber Pontificalis beweer egter dat Silverius na Palmarola verban is.


Volgens die "New Catholic Encyclopedia" (1966) is die datums van Pous Silverius se pontifikaat betwisbaar. Die begin is 1 of 8 Junie 536 tot ongeveer 11 November 537. Hy sterf waarskynlik op 2 Desember 537. Hy sou ook nooit heiligverklaar gewees het nie, maar is net deur die mense as heilige aangeroep. Die eerste keer dat sy naam in die lys van heiliges genoem word is in die 11de eeu.



Verering |


Pous Silverius is 'n heilige in die Rooms-Katolieke Kerk. Sy feesdag is op 2 Desember. Hy sou 'n groep vissers van die eiland Ponza wat deur 'n storm verras is en hom aangeroep het, gered het. Hy is die beskermheilige van die eiland.
