Pirolisis (Tulisan Jawi: ڤيروليسيس) ialah penguraian haba bahan pada suhu tinggi dalam atmosfera lengai.[1] Ia melibatkan perubahan komposisi kimia dan tak berbalik. Perkataan ini dicipta daripada unsur-unsur yang berasal dari bahasa Yunani pyro bermaksud "api" dan lysis bermaksud "memisahkan".


Pirolisis biasanya digunakan untuk bahan organik. Ia salah satu proses yang terlibat dalam perentungan kayu, bermula pada 200-300°C (390-570°F). Secara amnya, pirolisis bahan organik menghasilkan produk yang tidak menentu dan meninggalkan sisa pepejal yang diperkaya dengan karbon iaitu arang. Pirolisis yang melampau, yang meninggalkan sebahagian besar karbon sebagai sisa, dipanggil pengkarbonan.


Proses ini banyak digunakan dalam industri kimia, contohnya, untuk menghasilkan etilena, banyak bentuk karbon, dan bahan kimia lain daripada petroleum, arang batu, dan juga kayu, untuk menghasilkan kok daripada arang batu. Aplikasi berasaskan pirolisis akan mengubah biojisim menjadi singas dan arang biologi, sisa plastik kembali kepada minyak yang dapat digunakan, atau sisa buangan kepada bahan-bahan pakai buang yang selamat.

Pirolisis telah digunakan untuk mengubah kayu menjadi arang kayu sejak zaman purba. Banyak bahan kimia penting, seperti fosforus dan asid sulfurik, mula-mula diperolehi dengan proses ini. Dalam proses tahmitan mereka, orang Mesir kuno menggunakan metanol, yang diperolehi dari pirolisis kayu. Penyulingan kayu kering kekal sebagai sumber utama metanol hingga awal abad ke-20.[2]
