Papaver é un xénero de anxiospermas, coñecidas coma papoulas, que pertencen á familia Papaveraceae e que se distribúen por Europa, Asia e América do Norte.

Etimoloxía |


Do latín păpāvĕr, vĕris, co mesmo significado. Xa en Cátulo, 19,12; Virxilio, Eneida, 4, 486; Plinio o Vello, Historia Naturalis, 26, 67.



Descrición |


Son herbas anuais, bienais ou vivaces, con látex de ordinario branco e con follas máis ou menos divididas, as inferiores pecioladas e as superiores, cando existen, sésiles. As flores son actinomorfas, pedunculadas, terminais e solitarias e de casulo pénsil. Teñen 2 ou 3 sépalos, caedizos na floración e 4-6 Pétalos, fugaces, de prefloración corrugada, ás veces imbricados e de cor vermella, laranxa, amarela, branca ou violeta. Os estames son numerosos, con anteras subglobosas ou elipsoides mentres o ovario non ten estilo, mais un disco apical provisto de 3-18 estigmas radiais. O froito é unha cápsula de forma mazuda a subglobosa, unilocular, falsamente tabicada, case sempre dehiscente por uns poros situados baixo o disco. Contén numérosas sementes de 0,5-1,5 mm, reniformes, estriadas ou reticuladas, máis ou menos alveoladas e de diversas cores.[2][3][4]
