Frans Hals (Antwerpen, 1580 – Haarlem, 26. august 1666) jest proslavljeni holandski
portretista i pripadnik žanr slikarstva, kao i jedan od poznatijih flamanskih portretista iz prve polovine 17. vijeka. Uz Rembrandta van Rijna i u proteklih sto godina Johannesa Vermeera stavljen je u panteon velikih slikara holandskog zlatnog doba.


U drugoj polovini 19. vijeka Hals je zapravo bio najmarkantniji umjetnik u nekim slikarskim krugovima, a pogotovo u Parizu, pošto je mali opus Johannesa Vermeera u to vrijeme tek počinjao da se definiše. Buržoaski modeli na njegovim slikama, njegova često šarena paleta i iznad svega njegovi hrabri potezi četkicom postala je veċe nadahnuċe slikarima realizma i impresionizma nego što je to bio poštovani model Rembrandta.[1]
