1867 മുതൽ 1918 വരെ നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന ആസ്ട്രോ ഹംഗേറിയൻ സാമ്രാജ്യം ഒരു ഭരണഘടനാ യൂണിയൻ ആയിരുന്നു. ഇത് ആസ്ട്രിയ-ഹംഗറി എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. ഈ സാമ്രാജ്യം ഒന്നാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധത്തിലെ തോൽവി ഫലമായി തകർന്നു.1867 ലെ ഉടമ്പടി പ്രകാരമാണ് രണ്ടു രാജ്യങ്ങൾ ചേർന്ന ഈ വലിയസാമ്രാജ്യം നിലവിൽ വന്നത്. ഈ ഉടമ്പടിയുടെ ഫലമായി രണ്ടു രാജ്യങ്ങൾക്കും തുല്യ ഭരണ പ്രാധിനിത്യമുള്ള സാമ്രാജ്യമായി ഇത് മാറി.
വിദേശകാര്യം,സൈനികം എന്നീ വകുപ്പുകൾ രണ്ടു രാജ്യങ്ങളും ഒരുമിച്ച് നിയന്ത്രിച്ചപ്പോൾ , മറ്റ് വകുപ്പുകൾ രണ്ടു രാജ്യങ്ങൾക്കും പ്രത്യേകം ആയിരുന്നു.^[5]

ഈ സാമ്രാജ്യം യൂറോപ്പിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന ശക്തിയായി മാറി . റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിനു ശേഷം യൂറോപ്പിലെ ഏറ്റവും വിസ്തൃതമായ സാമ്രാജ്യം ഇതായിരുന്നു. ^[6]റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യവും ജർമ്മൻ സാമ്രാജ്യവും കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള യൂറോപ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യമായിരുന്നു ആസ്ട്രോ-ഹംഗറി.യു.എസ്.എ,ജർമ്മനി,ബ്രിട്ടൺ എന്നിവ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ യന്ത്രനിർമ്മാണ വ്യവസായം ആസ്ട്രോ-ഹംഗറിയിൽ ആയിരുന്നു.^[7] ആസ്ട്രോ ഹംഗേറിയൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽ ആസ്ട്രിയ , ഹംഗറി എന്നീ രണ്ടു രാജ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് പുറമേ ഹംഗറിയുടെ കീഴിൽ സ്വയംഭരണ അധികാരമുള്ള ക്രോയേഷ്യ-സ്ലോവേനിയ രാജ്യവും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. 1878 നു ശേഷം ബോസ്നിയ-ഹെർസഗോവിനയും ആസ്ട്രോ-ഹംഗേറിയൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ സൈനിക നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലായി.1908 ൽ ബോസ്നിയ-ഹെർസഗോവിന പൂർണ്ണമായും ആസ്ട്രോ ഹംഗേറിയൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി.^[8]

ഒന്നാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധത്തിനു ശേഷം

ഓസ്ട്രിയ-ഹംഗറി, ജർമ്മനി, ബൾഗേറിയ, ഓട്ടോമൻ സാമ്രാജ്യം എന്നിവ ചേർന്ന കേന്ദ്രീയശക്തികളുമായിരുന്നു ഒന്നാം ലോക മഹായുദ്ധത്തിൽ യുദ്ധരംഗത്ത് സജീവമായി നിലയുറപ്പിച്ചത്. വെഴ്സായ് ഉടമ്പടി ഒപ്പുവച്ചതിനു ശേഷം ഒന്നാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധം അവസാനിച്ചു.യുദ്ധാനന്തരം ഈ സാമ്രാജ്യം ആസ്ട്രിയ,ഹംഗറി എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് പുറമേ, യൂഗോസ്ലാവിയ,ചെക്കൊസ്ലൊവാക്യ എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങൾ ആയി വിഭജിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
