I've been wearing black work Sketcher shoes at work for over a year. Was on FMLA for back problems. Boss tells me I need a dr's note for "sneakers" & I explain these are not sneakers but he disagreed so I called dr, made an appt & asked for a note until I go to appt. Dr emails boss note stating I need these shoes. Boss goes to mgt, who comes back asking for a signed letter from dr AND an "end" date to "keep us honest". I told boss I will get it on my appt (2 days later) per dr & boss agreed. Done? Nope. While I'm on lunch, boss calls dr & asks when he can get that signed letter & asked for an "end" date, to which dr emails him back, same letter, this time adding I can now wear sneakers until the end of the year, then we will see if I need to wear them further. I come back from lunch, boss tells me he called dr & asked if I got a letter in my email because he didn't get it. Dr sent it to me, so I printed & gave it to him.

I didn't say a word, didn't complain once, only complied. Then out of the blue boss sends me an email that I should not take this personally & not to make it any bigger than it is. "Please."

What bothers me the most is that not only did they humiliate me to my dr by acting as though I can't be trusted, but they showed they care more about shoes & dress codes than my overall health. I'm curious to what anyone out there thinks about this. Am I overreacting by feeling targeted & degraded? People walking around with real sneakers, which I pointed out to boss, who told me, well, "I can't look into THEIR file." Would appreciate views on this. Cannot put where I work but it's for the justice system. It would be funny if it didn't upset me so much. This whole day I was tortured.

  • "Am I overreacting by feeling targeted & degraded? " - I would never let actions by my boss make me feel targeted and degraded. But we each get to decide how we react.

  • They're not sneakers but yes, I wore them anyway. I live too far to go home (as he suggested) and change. He told me this letter was enough until I go to appt but mgt wasn't happy about it, and then it was 6pm and time to leave, so really,, I don't know what to expect tomorrow except I am dreading it.

  • I'd expect the situation to stop here. You already gave your boss a physical letter signed by your doc explaining your situation. Continuing to deny or refuse such thing would be negative for your health and well-being, something your boss shouldn't be doing and could put him and management in trouble.

  • Joe S, I agree with you. That is why I decided to feel targeted because when mgt doesn't tell anyone else about their white sneakers, yet finds the time to pick on the one person who has health issues and is wearing black shoes, not resembling white sneakers, who doesn't deal with customers on any level and sits at a desk all day taking phone calls, then sure, I'd have to feel something. And it's not a good feeling. I would love to feel appreciated. lol But they don't give that one out.
