2019 Translation Subsidy Program
Publishers are hereby advised to approach ITHL via email litscene@ithl.org.il with any queries and requests re forthcoming submission rounds.
Please look for relevant updates, deadlines and further details of forthcoming rounds.
Publishers who undertake to translate a work of modern Hebrew literature can apply for a subsidy to help with the translation cost. This option is also available to literary journals that dedicate a special issue (or a special feature within an issue) to modern Hebrew literature, as well as to publishers who wish to publish anthologies. Aid is subject to approval by the board and availability of funds. We look forward to receiving your applications.

Aharon Appfeld, recipient of the Israel prize for literature and one of the most prominent and prolific voices in Hebrew and Jewish literature, died last night
Throughout his illustrious career, his well renowned books won many prizes, including a nomination for the Man Booker prize in 2013. His vast and touching body of work, with the addition his latest book, published only three months ago, will continue to tug the heartstrings of many. May he rest in peace.

Ronit Matalon, one of the most original, unique and interesting voices in Hebrew literature, passed away on December 2017.
Ronit Matalon, who only yesterday received the Brenner prize for her latest novella “And the Bride Closed the Door”, was a brave voice that will be gravely missed. May she rest in peace.

The ITHL mourns the untimely loss of Nava Semel, a prolific author, poet, plasyright, screenwriter and translator. Nava Semel, whose unique voice and painful yet humorous depictions of, among many other topics, the experiences of second generation holocaust survivors, has been translated to many languages. David Grossman awarded Man Booker International Prize 2017
"A Horse Walks Into a Bar", Grossman's latest novel, scoops £50,000 prize to be shared with translator Jessica Cohen. Cohen is one of most prominent translators from Hebrew - her portfolio includes many acclaimed authors such as Ronit Matalon, Nava Semel, Etgar Keret, Dorit Rabinyan and Amir Gutfreund. Amos Oz and his translator awarded an outstanding Chinese literary award
Amos Oz, one of the most prominent Israeli authors and an old friend of the ITHL, received the first Jingdong Literature Prize: his "Scenes from Village Life" became the best translated work. Oz will be sharing the prize money - 1 million yuan ($147,100) - with his Chinese translator, Dr. Zhong Zhiqing, who over the years has been working tirelessly to introduce Hebrew literature to the Chinese audience. Israel's 2016 Golden and Platinum titles announced
In the run-up to the Jerusalem International Book Fair (11-15.06) the Book Publishers Association of Israel has announced the Golden and Platinum titles of 2016 - those that sold more than 20,000 and more than 40,000 copies in Israel respectively. Among ITHL's titles, Zeruya Shalev's "Pain" and Merav Halperin's "My Husband's Not Home" appeared on the Golden list, while Deborah Omer's 1967 classic "Sarah Aharonson, Heroine" was named Platinum. "Waking Lions" - 2017 Winner of JQ Wingate Prize
Ayelet Gundar-Goshen's captivating novel won the 2017 Jewish Quarterly Wingate Prize. This annual prize, worth £4,000, is the only UK literary prize of its kind and is awarded to the best book to translate the idea of Jewishness to the general reader. The Prize committee praised Gundar-Goshen’s work, saying that it is “an incredibly compelling and enjoyable read” and “an important piece of work in light of the present-day refugee crisis.” For more information click here.
