I want to have my character be cursed with eternal youth from a backstory perspective. She'll still be "killable"; she just can't age.
Would that break AL rules?
I know you can add to or change flavor for preexisting stuff as long as it doesn't change any mechanics, so I wanted to know if my proposed change would count as adding mechanics. Backstories aren't really a mechanic from my understanding, so I want to be sure I won't otherwise break AL rules before I write it up and present it to a DM.
To be clear, I'm not actually playing in AL, I just want to use those rules as a baseline to judge if this backstory would have any balance issues.

What about your character being magically aged? What about his life expectancy and death from the old age?

I don't think @Molot meant a particular spell. There are several effects that cause your character to age, for example the ghost's Horrifying Visage

@Sdjz I see I can't very well make my character immune to a magic effect even if it's kinda a dumb thing. I actually don't plan to choose adventures league I just wanted to use it as a starting point as I'm not good at balance.

Out of curiosity: At what age would the character have stopped aging—5, 12, 17, later? Also, is the PC's eternal youth a justification for a narrative advantage—he's memorized every book in the setting's biggest library, he's that lovable scamp at all the setting's inns, he has a reputation as a youthful yet immortal warrior therefore unnerving his foes? In short, I'd like to know—either here or in the question—what impact you expect this curse (which, honestly, sounds like the best "curse" ever) to have on the story were it approved.

No, this kind of detail is not AL compliant. When you create a character, you create that character using the rules for races (which specify typical ages and lifespans) and backgrounds from Adventurers League Content Catalogue. None of those include this particular "curse" — nor do any of them include anything which would make you quite so special. (Citation: Adventurer's League Player's Guide, page 2.)
In my experience in Adventurer's League, if you would bring this to the table, you would get one of two reactions:
- "Uh, no, that's not really a thing, sorry. Do you maybe want to be an elf? They have a long lifespan."
- "Okay, whatever." — and then this would never come up in the game, because they tend to be role-play light and combat heavy, or at least with role-play constrained within the options in the published adventure being run.
Backstories are definitely meant to be a "mechanic" in 5E. As the Player's Handbook says:
The sample backgrounds in this chapter provide both concrete benefits (features, proficiencies, and languages) and roleplaying suggestions.
These "concrete benefits" are "mechanics", and "I live forever" is certainly a concrete benefit — but a custom one.
That said, from the many hours I've played with different AL DMs, backgrounds usually only come up in AL in the extremely rare case when the author of the content thought to put something special for a specific background in that module. This is why you might get option 2: it's unlikely to actually matter.

Sort of, if you play the Warforged race from Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron.
From D&D Beyond:
Age
A typical warforged is between two and thirty years old. The maximum lifespan of the warforged remains a mystery; so far, warforged have shown no signs of deterioration due to age.
* AL Legal in the Ebberron setting.
$endgroup$
$begingroup$
This is very "sort of". First, of course, Ebberon is not the most common AL setting and this option isn't legal in other settings. But also, in that setting, all warforged are relatively young, so there's no telling. It's possible that they're eternal, but also possible that they tend to conk out suddenly at much shorter than human lifespan.

Sort of, if you play the Warforged race from Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron.
From D&D Beyond:

This is very "sort of". First, of course, Ebberon is not the most common AL setting and this option isn't legal in other settings. But also, in that setting, all warforged are relatively young, so there's no telling. It's possible that they're eternal, but also possible that they tend to conk out suddenly at much shorter than human lifespan.

@MageintheBarrel If you're not actually planning to run AL you should just talk to your DM about what they'll allow rather than worrying about what's allowed in AL.
