Die Worsboom (Kigelia) is 'n genus van angiosperms (blommende plante) in die familie Bignoniaceae. Die genus bestaan uit slegs een spesie, Kigelia africana. Dit kom reg deur tropiese Afrika vanaf Eritrea en Tsjad, suid tot noordelike Suid-Afrika, en die weste van Senegal en Namibië voor.

Die boom se genusnaam is afgelei van die Mosambiekse Bantoenaam, kigeli-keia. Die algemene naam is Worsboom of Sausage Tree in Engels. Die boom se Arabiese naam verwys na "die pa van groot sakke" (Roodt, 1992).



Verbouing en gebruike |


Vrugte van die boom word vir 'n verskeidenheid van tradisionele Afrika-kure aangewend. Daar word geglo dat die vrugte vir rumatiek, slangbyte, bose geeste, sifilis, en selfs vir tornado's (Watkins, 1975) werk. 'n Alkoholiese drank soortgelyk aan bier word ook daarvan gemaak. Die vars vrugte is giftig en is 'n sterk purgeermiddel. Die vrugte word gedroog, gebraai of gefermenteer (Joffe 2003; Mc-Burney 2004) om dit vir menslike gebruik voor te berei. In Botswana word die boom se hout vir mokoro's (mekoro), jukke en rieme gebruik (Roodt 1992). Dit word selfs vir 'n aantal velsorg-produkte ingespan.


Die boom word algemeen as 'n sierplant in tropiese gebiede (vir sy dekoratiewe blomme en ongewone vrugte) gegroei. Die plekke waar dit aangeplant word moet egter met groot omsigtigheid gekies word. As die vrugte val kan dit ernstige besering veroorsaak en skade aan geparkeerde voertuie onder die bome aanrig.
