Whenever I meet new people for business, if they don't say it, I never say any phatic expression like combination of
delighted/glad/nice/pleased +
to meet you/make your acquaintance.
This phatic expression may be social custom, but feels too affected. It feels phony to pretend that their acquaintance would be gladdening you don't know them (especially if they're wearing sunglasses indoors when there's no sunshine), and sometimes it IS affected when you'd rather not have met them at all after several minutes of knowing them!
To my knowledge, the only alternative is "how do you do?" . But this doesn't substitute well, as some people mishear this as "How are you doing?", and be visibly dazed or insulted why I didn't reciprocate their "nice to meet you" greeting.
