Sorry if this I long, I felt with more detail the better you may understand and give better advice from it. I had a bad feeling about this recruiter from the start but the company and position overshowed my doubts about him.
I have been causally keeping an eye on openings in a one particular sector which is specialized and small. I have been waiting patiently for an opening in one certain industry that would allow me to utilize my knowledge and skills.
The past 6 months, I have only sent out my resume twice with one company reaching out within a day saying the listing was no longer available and the second reaching out 3-4 months later. This particular company uses an exclusive third party recruiter firm.
When the recruiter first contacted me he was wondering if I was still interested in the position which I told him I was and the job description was attached to the first e-mail he sent. Two days later he sent me an e-mail informing me that the company has made adjustments to the original position and sent me a new job description. I thought that was really strange but the new job description was geared towards the one thing that I have passion for unlike the original it was many different commodities. It was for a public company with much growth potential and going through changes to where I could leave my own footprint for decades
The very first phone call, I gave him a dollar amount I would need for relocating along with how I would like to see if distributed, and aloo gave him my salary expectations. He said was I was asking for was aligned with what they are willing to pay. When I countered the original offer , the recruiter comes back with a BS story about how a family of 4 relocated from the East Coast to one of the richest zip codes out West with the same offer I was offered. I point out if a family wants to move to the a town on the beach in Cali then that would trump any dollar amount or if they were unemployed desperation makes people do irrational things. With this package I would have to pay $15k out of pocket without being reimbursed and I am a single guy who rents and was just going to bring myself out there and get a furnished apartment. After that phone call he e-mailed me and stated that they will not negotiate anymore on the relocation and negotiating salary is over also since they just hired someone with 15 years of experience (I have 12) who has a masters (preferred not mandatory)
The offer comes in and it is a total low ball offer which the recruiter defending. I was told by two different employees in upper management I am by far the most qualified person they have found in over a year of looking. During this time I start noticing that the recruiter was dishonest and I felt like I needed to hire my own agent to negotiate. It seems to me but unlikely that this recruiter is trying to pat his own pocket more by refusing to negotiate unreasonable terms for more mutually beneficial terms between the company and I
QUESTION: I don't know the hiring manager on a personal level but we do network in some of the same associations and same people. Can I directly send the hiring manager a letter stating why I am with a heavy heart and with much disappointment on why I declining the offer, also thanking him for the opportunity, but also state that the recruiter withheld information that could have saved everyone some time.
